What is unexplained infertility?

In the UK, it is estimated that 1 in 7 couples experience infertility with 1 in 4 of these cases being classed as unexplained by doctors. This means that no obvious cause of infertility has been found and it is at this stage that conventional medicine may suggest IVF. However, if you work with a Fertility Nutritional Therapist, we consider a wealth of factors ‘beneath the surface’ that could be contributing to a couple’s inability to conceive. Here is a selection of the areas that we work on every day with clients who have a diagnosis of ‘unexplained infertility’. All these areas have compelling evidence based scientific research, highlighting their importance to fertility.

  • Poor egg health
  • Poor sperm health
  • Impaired ovulation
  • Stress
  • Exposure to toxins
  • Bacterial imbalances in the gut or vaginal microbiome
  • Thyroid imbalances
  • Poor dental health
  • Sperm DNA damage
  • Poor gut health
  • Inflammation
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Hormone imbalances

We firmly believe that fertility can not be simply ‘unexplained’, there is a reason for everything. Our bodies are a complex system of interconnected systems and processes. Even small imbalances can have a huge cascading effect on our overall health and wellbeing, including our fertility. So in reality, a shift of focus on our overall optimal health may help us to identify any potential underlying imbalances which may be contributing to our struggles to conceive.
